Why they disappear and the setup order that actually works

Many Business Central users have found themselves in the same situation. You configure a Financial Report, assign an Analysis View, and everything looks correct. Then you run the report and the Analysis View you selected has vanished. It feels like the system is ignoring your choice. The good news is that there is a reason for this and a reliable way to prevent it.
These results were observed and verified in Business Central Version 27.1.
Where the disappearing view comes from
The Financial Reports feature uses modern report pages, but the Row Definitions and Column Definitions behind them still include elements from older design patterns. Because of this mix of old and new, the system assigns more authority to the Row Definition than the Column Definition or the report header.
During testing, a consistent pattern emerged.
- The Analysis View on the Row Definition is treated as the source of truth
- If the Column Definition contains a different Analysis View, Business Central replaces it with the row’s value
- If the Column Definition contains an Analysis View and the row does not, the system removes it
- If you remove the Analysis View from the Row Definition, Business Central clears the view from the Financial Report the next time you run it
- The Column Definition may display an Analysis View but the report does not use it unless the row definition matches
- When you assign an Analysis View to the Row Definition, Business Central immediately defaults the same value onto the Column Definition
The result is a disappearing value that feels unpredictable until you understand this priority.
Why this behavior may evolve in future versions
Financial Reports continue to receive updates as Microsoft aligns them with the wider reporting framework in Business Central. Today the system uses a mix of modern report pages and older row and column definition structures. This mix is what creates the priority behavior where the Row Definition controls the Analysis View.
As Microsoft continues modernizing financial reporting, it is reasonable to expect clearer ownership of settings, removal of legacy fields, and more predictable persistence of Analysis Views. Future versions may consolidate these settings so the report header becomes the single source of truth. Until then, understanding how the current design evaluates definitions gives you reliable control over reporting outcomes.
The setup order that works
There is a straightforward way to make the Analysis View stable. Follow this order each time you build a Financial Report that depends on analysis views.
- Open the Row Definition and assign the Analysis View you want the report to use
- Open the Column Definition and confirm the Analysis View has defaulted to match the row
- Create or open the Financial Report and select the row and column definitions
- Assign the same Analysis View on the Financial Report header
- Run the report once to allow the system to refresh and apply the definitions

When the row and column definitions match and the report header aligns with them, Business Central stops clearing the value. The Analysis View remains stable and the report works as intended.
Why this matters
A disappearing Analysis View is frustrating, especially during period end reporting when timing is important. Understanding how Business Central evaluates the definitions gives you the control you need to build reliable reports. It also helps teams avoid the trial and error that often occurs when the setup order is not clear.
Consistent setup leads to consistent reporting. That is the Righter Way to build confidence in financial results.
